Listening to Stillness

Dear Reader,

Winter is upon us. Literally. The lizards in my house have disappeared and there are no more mosquitoes that need swatting. They tell me that winter is the perfect time to shed busyness, to put it on hold. When we return, the world will be right there, I’m sure, hardly having missed us. The unimaginable amount of words hurled into the universe each second will be gone, of course, but we won’t need them. So, we can effectively give in to the whims of winter. Slip into our sweaters and exist in the empty moments.

LISTENING TO STILLNESS

No more talk today. I’ll step out and

listen

to the margosa leaves rushing down

to the ground.

Listen

to the morning sun, the cat

scratching

on the roof, duckweeds

in the lake, twitching

of the knees, the melting

candle.

Share their aloneness & quiet(ly)

not scroll through life, un-mend

the washer, gather breadcrumbs

of thoughts, disarm hypnotic

clatter of chat(ter).

So all that grows, grows

within me nestling

like morning

dew on the skin.

  1. Such a beautiful write, Sonia. I love how you talk about winter, how the lizards in your house have disappeared, how we give in to the whims of winter and slip on our sweaters. It definitely feels as if our bodies naturally wish to embody this stillness, I’ve been feeling it especially lately 💕

  2. Such a beautiful poem, Sonia. Winter is setting in too here in Bangalore. It was chilly today with a nudge to slow down and stay in. I loved how you started your poem with ‘No more talk today’.
