Just Like That …

A little scribble inspired by a Murakami story.

And just like that
we run into the season
of booties and gloves.
The blossoms gone
in the blink of an eye,
vanished in the small interval
between sundown and rise.
And just like them we turn
a form into a blob into a dot
into no trace of any thing
a mishmash of atoms hanging in air.
And just like that we become a vague memory
out occasionally in family gatherings.
How long does memory last?

  1. “The blossoms gone
in the blink of an eye,”
    — yes, isn’t it crazy how fast the seasons pass.
But what a season it was raising my babies. What a phenomenal season that was for my husband and me.
We blinked once and there they were— young men with their own lives to live.

But I tend to see the fallen petals of those blossoming years as my memories. Plenty.
For how long these will last? For as long as memory serves me.
So happy to have lived the season like I did, for their childhood and growing years gave ME happy memories. They will get their chance when their season comes.

Perhaps I took your words out of the context you intended but this is how your words spoke to me.
I know You’re a parent of young kids. In a few years you’ll understand what I’m saying. Enjoy your little ones. They’re only little for a brief season. And just like that you notice the season changed. Just like that!

  2. These words moved me. Having lost someone dear to me a while ago, these words validate the thoughts I dealt with. Thanks, Sonia.

  3. This is such a poignant reminder of life’s impermanence. Loved each verse of it & the transition that comes along. My favourite line is- “And just like them we turn
a form into a blob into a dot”. Even before I could imagine myself turning from a form to a blob, lo, I become a dot. That imagery is sure to stay with me forever. And as always, you amuse me with your surprising/shocking endings. Much love!!
