Day 21 at NaPoWriMo. The prompt is an interesting one. This prompt asks you to write a poem in which you first recall someone you used to know closely but are no longer in touch with, then a job you used to have but no longer do, and then a piece of art that you saw once and that has stuck with you over time. Finally, close the poem with an unanswerable question.
I loved doing this. It took me back to the memory of a close friend and a plant gifted by her. The jade is a symbol of friendship. They say if it grows white flowers, friendships blossom. I tried to string the three given situations. Hope you enjoy reading.
JADE
The jade on the ledge, hasn’t grown flowers
No milky whites floating in oceans of green
I fixed the broken pot, though
The art of Kintsugi
No dust of gold or silver
Plastered it with memory,
Of holding hands, our many fingers melting perfectly.
The webs between mine feel empty, now.
Has the jade on your ledge grown flowers?
On a summer morning I carried the pot to school
The oriental porcelain inviting curious hands
It’s lovely teacher, they said
Launching it at my feet
The spreading roots
smeared in mud, I scooped.
That’s when I learnt Kintsugi.
In an art gallery where colours make love
A slender frame
Splashes of white on green
Fluffy cotton balls flirting in fields
Enclose me
I bring them to the jade for company.
The webs between my fingers still feel empty.
Has the jade on your ledge grown flowers?

Wonderful tale of longing and missing but also maybe of letting go and rebirth?

I wish we could repair the broken soul with memories and find a new form of beauty out of the brokenness.

I understand the relevance of questions – does it mean u nurtured the Jade, mended it , found a perfect company but still you feel empty ?? very beautifully expressed – HOPE I understood it right ?
The art of Kintsugi is fascinating 🙂

Wow!! This is the first time I am reading a poem on the Jade. I have a plant (bonsai) that’s been with me for over 20 years and still not flowered. (I have seen the Jade bloom in the US.) I love my plant as it has travelled with us on our postings over the country. Great post!
