One of the problems I face on social media is definitely interaction. I wouldn’t like to call myself an introvert but my inability to make conversation about little things often leaves me speechless (comment-less). My engagement is limited to reading, sharing and talking about everything writing-related.

But there is a nook where I find it easy to engage and share my thoughts. It is certainly this blog and some writing communities that help me keep track of my progress. I am glad to be a part of The Insecure Writers’ Support Group (IWSG) and put up a monthly post as part of the community tradition. If you wish to meet and find your tribe, consider visiting the IWSG Website here.

WEP Badge by Olga Godim
It was through the IWSG that I was introduced to Write, Edit, Publish (WEP), a community of published authors and new writers who write prompt-based flash fiction or poetry every alternate month. The WEP has contributed immensely to my craft and also to my self-belief as a writer. I am happy to share that I’ve joined the WEP team as a trainee co-host. The first prompt-based challenge is already up and if you wish to join us, please visit the WEP website here and get all the details and also check out the new look of the website. For one, we are writing on GONE WITH THE WIND! Excited? Jump right in! There are some exciting prizes to be won.

And now, for the February 1 question, If you are an Indie author, do you make your own covers or purchase them? If you publish trad, how much input do you have about what goes on your cover?
Well, we all know the important role that book covers play in the journey of a book. I am still in the process of querying and putting things together, so I’m not sure what my answer should be. But I do have a temporary cover that I’ve made to keep me going and give the required motivation, as also the feel of a real book. How about you? How do you design your covers?
The awesome co-hosts for the February 1 posting of the IWSG are Jacqui Murray, Ronel Janse van Vuuren, Pat Garcia, and Gwen Gardner! Do visit them and show some love.
Until we meet again, happy writing!

Sonia, thanks again for joining Team WEP. You’re going to have a blast, although it’s a lot of work! But work I can’t give up – I’m obviously addicted to the concept of bringing writers together.
Great shout out for WEP and you’ve created some interest. Be great to get new writers.
A temporary cover is easily done on Canva. Olga did a temp cover for our WEP Anthology.

I had some tutoring over the years from a graphic designer colleague, so I’m designing my own, keeping the design simple.

I would love to learn too. It’s a good idea to design your own covers.

The comventional wisdom is not that’s not a good idea to design your own covers. On the other hand, I’ve seen plenty of professional covers that looked pretty amateurish.

Temporary covers I can do, but I won’t dare do anything serious. hehehe

I’m not sure if I too would want to venture that far!

I’m not good with graphics, not even a mock cover. Good for you for figuring that out.

I like the temporary cover idea. I sometimes like mine so much I send it to the designer as an example. So far, they’ve roundly rejected my work!

Haha. I wouldn’t mind sending mine either.

Testing water was cheap, comparatively.
More like Jean de Florette, and various other water sharing conflicts.

Congratulations, Loni. You’ll be a great co-host for WEP. I’m going to check it out. Altho, my time-management skills are not good these days.

Sorry, Sonia. I was just visiting Loni; hence the mistake in calling you her. I’m going back to see if I called her you.

I’ve never made a temporary cover. What a great idea. But I’m not sure I’m talented enough to do even that.

I just made one using Canva. Not much talent, here as well.

Thanks. Part of a community – that’s how it feels, thanks to the ‘ insecure’ statement. Book groups in town too easily dominated by two or three more vocal people – and a lone man didn’t return.
Didn’t mention another powerful reason for indie covers- Huge and terrifying bills we have to pay – i n five figures.
